SAFETY TIPS IN PUBLIC RESTROOMS

A visit to a public restroom for me is quite nerve-wracking!! How about you?

Public restrooms in airports, malls, restaurants, hotels and stores serve a very useful purpose. When away from home, we all rely on the availability of public restrooms. Unfortunately, public restrooms aren't always completely safe or clean.

When you dare to venture into the confines of the restroom (or toilet as we often call it here in Naija) you may find yourself pushing open the door with your elbows, crouching precariously above the toilet seat rather than letting your skin touch it, and flushing with your shoe.

While there's plenty of bathroom paranoia to go around, anxiety might be a little overdone. Yes, there can be plenty of bugs lying in wait in public restrooms, but if your immune system is healthy, and if you adopt simple hygienic measures like hand washing, you should be able to deliver a knockout punch to most of what you encounter and perhaps put your "germ-phobia" to rest.

Before you panic, the toilet seat is not a common vehicle for transmitting infections to humans. Many disease-causing organisms can survive for only a short time on the surface of the seat, and for an infection to occur, the germs would have to be transferred from the toilet seat to your urethral or genital tract, or through a cut or sore on the buttocks or thighs, which is possible but very unlikely (Source: American Society for Microbiology Resource).

SAFETY TIPS TO ALWAYS CONSIDER:

1.        Use antibacterial wipes to clean seats before using the toilets. Hover above the seats; do not actually sit on the toilet bowl.

2.       Don't pull your pants too far down. Pull them down about midway between your knees and feet.

3.       Close the lid of the toilet bowl with your hand covered with tissue/wipes before flushing. Flushing releases airborne particles and germs which could be reduced by closing the lid.

4.      Wash your hands after using the restroom. Rubbing soapy water all over the hands and fingers for 20 to 30 seconds, including under the fingernails. As you create friction by rubbing the hands together, you'll loosen the disease-causing particles on the hands. After rinsing thoroughly, repeat the process.

5.       Avoid touching taps, handles and knobs after you have washed your hands. If your public restroom has doors, use clean paper towel (tissue)/wipes to cover the door handle as you open it. Discard the paper towel after you have left the restroom.

6.      Children younger than 6 years old should NOT be left unattended.

7.       Use hot-air hand dryers with care. In order to feel the hot air, you might have to get very close to the vents. Don't let your hands touch the surface of the vents, however, or you'll risk contamination.

8.      Complain to management of the facility you are in about poor restroom conditions. The more they know, the better they should get at putting it in shape.

9.      Lastly, be careful and vigilant when using public restrooms as some people fall prey to petty thieves and other unsavoury characters while in restrooms.

WHAT MAKES A CONVENIENCE CONVENIENT?

This weekend, I found myself in a place I really detest. There was no water in the house. The neighbours that usually pump the water travelled and we were not aware. So, we kept wondering why the water was not flowing. Thankfully, we sorted it out by Sunday but not before we faced water shortage in the “convenience”.

For me, flowing water is the number one item that makes a convenience convenient. I am not thrilled that I currently have to clean the restroom using water from a bucket. The WCs need some plumbing work and the plumber has been playing date games with us. I hope we sort that out soon.

Another must have, in my opinion, is toilet paper. I guess you can work around it but really, I don’t want to have to.

Please share with us what makes a convenience convenient for you.

AN ULTRA CLEAN RESTROOM: IS IT POSSIBLE?

An ultra-clean restroom is a restroom that is visually appealing, germ-free and makes the users comfortable when inside it. A restroom is defined as a room equipped with toilets and sinks for public use.

Is it really possible to get ultra-clean restrooms in this part of the world? Even some high ranking hotels fall short as per the cleanliness standards of their restrooms.

The objective of cleaning a restroom is to make it visually appealing, comfortable for users and most importantly germ-free. The appearance of the restroom is extremely important as it is a first measure of how effective the cleaning of the restroom is.

In running or managing a restroom, the restroom manager should understand that the restroom is offering value to its users. Having this as a core reminder helps the manager work towards ensuring the restrooms are ultra clean and safe for use.

A recent survey conducted by Cintas (a facilities services company) in major companies in America found that “People form perceptions about the way companies do business based on a simple trip to the restroom.”

If this is so, why won’t major companies go the extra mile in ensuring their restrooms are ultra clean and inviting?

Loo Talk 3 – The things I’ve heard in the Loo

I was in the stall of a restroom/washroom doing my business when someone walked in, talking with her account officer on the phone. With nowhere to go and nothing else to do, I heard her reeling out private account details and possibly passwords. Not long after, another person came into the restroom, entered a stall and began to give off really private details. I have actually overheard someone having a phone (job) interview in an adjacent stall of the restroom in my office.

I have a few questions

1.       What are your thoughts on restrooms with stalls?

2.       Do you think privacy should be considered when building restrooms?

3.       Will you make “private” phone calls (or any phone calls for that matter) in a restroom?

4.       Is privacy an overarching need when deciding which restrooms are cool or not?

We’ll love to hear your interesting restroom stories. Please share your views and experiences.

Loo Talk 2 – Restroom Detectors

I remember a restroom I visited that had a means of detecting when someone had used the toilet and left their ‘business’ unattended to. I was told that the sensor works with the closing of the door. Once it senses that the door is closed, it checks the toilet bowl to confirm that it is clean.

I was thinking about this ‘restroom’ business so I decided to look up “Toilet Matters”. The first website I found was quite interesting. It was about a family that agreed to have a sensor installed in their toilet paper pad to collect data on toilet paper usage.

A few questions stand out to me

1.       Will you allow a detector be installed in your restroom at home?

2.       Will you feel comfortable using a restroom with detectors in a public place?

3.       Is it ethical to install detectors in restrooms?

Please share your views and experiences.

So, why are we interested in what your restroom looks like?

These are a few comments on a post I put up about my unpleasant experience in a restroom I visited recently…You can read the post itself here

“I still don’t understand why some ‘topshot’ organizations don’t pay attention to their restrooms. I mean they’re making good money…To Whom It May Concern, some of us will take our business elsewhere if we consider you tacky enough to have such a mess as a restroom...”

“I rate organizations and places I go by their toilets. If your toilet is not welcoming, then in my opinion, you are a crappy company…”

“Even churches, if your toilet isn’t clean, I won’t attend…It is one of the reasons I stuck to my present church”
